TEEN SUICIDE PREVENTION AWARENESS WEEK: September 4-12, 2011
Teen Lifeline, in collaboration with, 1n10, A New Leaf, ASU College of Nursing, Banner Health, Community Bridges, Crisis Response Network, La Frontera - EMPACT SPC, Stonewall Institute and Tumbleweed, has again been granted a Governor’s Proclamation for “Teen Suicide Prevention Week,” which is the first full week in September. During this week (September 4-10), these organizations will visit eight Valley high offering information regarding what symptoms to look for in those contemplating suicide, as well as places they can go to help if they need help and ARE thinking about suicide.During this week, 8 school-based rallies will be held at various schools throughout the valley. Each school-based rally will be held in a different city so as to reach the most diverse student population possible (i.e. Scottsdale, Phoenix, Mesa, , Glendale, Goodyear, Buckeye, Avondale).
In addition to the school based rallies we will hosting a community rally on Friday, September 10th at Desert Ridge Market Place from 6p.m. to 10p.m. and another on Saturday, September 11th at Tempe Marketplace from 7p.m. to 10p.m. Join us to learn more about valuable resources for teens, live music, raffles, prizes and lifesaving information. Remember, take time to enjoy living! These rallies are intended to incorporate various community agencies, students from schools throughout the metropolitan area, school administrators, school faculty, parents and the general public. The goal of these rallies is to educate and inform the public about the prevention of teen suicide and the resources available to youth throughout Maricopa County. This includes information about risk factors in teens and how to identify warning signs as well as how to help a teen that may be thinking about suicide.
Come out and see a free concert at each rally. In addition to the life saving information, Americana/Alternative Country singer and songwriter Adam Smith, singer/songwriter Olivia Cannon, and dancers from the renowned Scorpius Dance Theatre will perform free concerts from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Fri., Sept. 9 on the District Stage at Desert Ridge Marketplace in Phoenix, and again from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Sat., Sept. 10 on the District Stage of Tempe Marketplace. The concerts, supported by Teen Lifeline, offer a rare opportunity to see the talented artists perform together.
